- 1. Common Information
-
- 1.1. NFS Client Beta/Release20000310 for Windows2000 consists of the
- following files:
- a) XWPNFSFS.SYS - a network file system driver (redirector);
- b) XWNTSERV.EXE - an executable file (service);
- c) XWNTFS32.DLL - the network provider DLL;
- d) NFSCLPAR EXE - a settings viewer/editor;
- e) NFSSETUP.EXE - a simple installation program;
- f) UNINSTAL.EXE - a simple uninstallation program;
- g) NFSC2K_B.TXT - this file.

- NOTE!!!
- Beta is an evaluation version of NFS Client that implements
- a limited set of FS driver functions.
- Authors tested this package on the Pentium-II/233 computer
- under Windows 2000 Professional Build 2031 (Beta 3)
- and Build 2195.

- NOTE!!!
- Before you start testing this package, you should be able
- to restart your PC from diskettes or another way to manually
- remove any files from the Windows 2000 system directory if you
- could not restart Windows 2000.

- 2. NFS Client Installation
-
- !!! Important note: this package may be installed only using !!!
- !!! Administrative Privileges !!!

- 2.1. Run the self-extracting "nfsc2k_b.exe" archive file.
- This file may be found into the directory with uncompressed
- X-WinPro/ProNFS package distributive.

- 2.2 The "nfsc2k_b.exe" archive will be uncompressed into the
- prompted temporary directory on a hard disk (e.g. "C:\nfsc2k_b.src").
- Then the NFSSETUP.EXE from this directory will be started.
- Go through the installation process.

- 2.3. If installation is successful, then the following files should be
- seen in the Windows 2000 system directory (after system restart):
- XWPNFSFS.SYS -> \SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\XWPNFSFS.SYS,
- XWNTSERV.EXE -> \SYSTEM32\XWNTSERV.EXE,
- XWNTFS32.DLL -> \SYSTEM32\XWNTFS32.DLL

- The "NFSCLPAR.EXE" and "UNINSTALL.EXE" files will be placed
- into the prompted "c:\xnfsclnt" control directory. These programs
- are also accessible via Windows "Start menu" :
- - "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Settings";
- - "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Uninstall".

- You can check out the registration of NFS Client by the regedt32
- facility. Look for the following keys:
- - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Labtam->XWPNFS32;
- - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Control->
- NetworkProvider->Order;
- - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Services->
- XWNTSERV;
- - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Services->
- XwpNTrdr;
- 2.4. Restart Your PC.

- 3. Testing
-
- 3.1. Double click "My Network Place" and then "Entire Network".
- You will see the "XwpNTrdr" icon.
- (May be, you will have to select "Entire contents of the network".)
- 3.2. Double click on the "XwpNTrdr" and then "Remote NFS Servers" icons.
- As a result, you will see a list of nodes of your local network
- with available NFS Server.
- 3.3. By double clicking, select a node you want to connect to.
- You will see icons with names of exported directories.
- 3.4. Select an exported directory and press the right mouse button.
- Select the "Map Network Drive..." item in the popup menu.
- Select a letter to mount a drive and press "Finish".
- As a result, you will see the contents of the mounted directory
- on your desktop.
- 3.5. You should test the following operations:
- - Creating new files and directories;
- - Deleting files and directories;
- - Renaming files;
- - Copying files from remote to local machine and vice versa.
- - Viewing the contents of files by WordPad, and so on.
- 3.6. Dismounting the network drive:
- - Select "My Computer" and press the right mouse button.
- - Select the "Dismount Network Drive..." item in the popup menu,
- then select the mounted drive, and press "OK".

- 4. NFS Client Removing
-
- 4.1. Run "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Uninstall"
- (or directly the UNINSTAL.EXE from the directory
- containing the NFS-Client package).
- 4.2. Go through the uninstallation process.
- 4.3. You can check the result of removing by regedt32 (see 2.3.).
- 4.4. Restart your PC.

- 5. NFS Client settings

- 5.1. Run "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Settings".
- 5.2. View/change settings.
- 5.3. Restart your PC if necessary.

- 6. Known disadvantages
-
- 1. The NT Memory caching not implemented.
- 2. The Memory Mapped Files not implemented.
- 3. The Paging I/0 requests not supported.
- 4. The UNC (Universal Naming Conventional) not implemented.
- 5. The using of nonmapped imported directories (e.g., by
- double click) not implemented.
- 6. The "PCNFSd"-authentication of the NFS Client user not implemented.
- 7. The File Lock/Unlock requests not supported yet.
- 8. Not all "Get/Set" file attributes functions implemented yet.

- 7. Known Problems
-
- 1. It is possible to hang up the MS Explorer up to 5 minutes after
- create/delete a directory on mounted devices.
- 2. Icons of executable files may be incorrect.
- 3. The time attributes of files in DOS sessions may be wrong.

- The significantly improved beta 3 version will be issued
- at the end of May'2000.
