  8.                       1. Common Information
  9.  
  10.    1.1. NFS Client Beta/Release20000310 for Windows2000 consists of the
  11.         following files:
  12.       a) XWPNFSFS.SYS - a network file system driver (redirector);
  13.       b) XWNTSERV.EXE - an executable file (service);
  14.       c) XWNTFS32.DLL - the network provider DLL;
  15.       d) NFSCLPAR EXE - a settings viewer/editor;
  16.       e) NFSSETUP.EXE - a simple installation program;
  17.       f) UNINSTAL.EXE - a simple uninstallation program;
  18.       g) NFSC2K_B.TXT   - this file.

  20.      NOTE!!!
  21.           Beta is an evaluation version of NFS Client that implements
  22.           a limited set of FS driver functions.
  23.           Authors tested this package on the Pentium-II/233 computer
  24.           under Windows 2000 Professional Build 2031 (Beta 3)
  25.           and Build 2195.

  27.      NOTE!!!
  28.           Before you start testing this package, you should be able
  29.           to restart your PC from diskettes or another way to manually
  30.           remove any files from the Windows 2000 system directory if you
  31.           could not restart Windows 2000.

  34.                      2. NFS Client Installation
  35.

  39.    2.1. Run the self-extracting "nfsc2k_b.exe" archive file.
  40.         This file may be found into the directory with uncompressed
  41.         X-WinPro/ProNFS package distributive.
  42.  
  43.    2.2  The "nfsc2k_b.exe" archive will be uncompressed into the
  44.         prompted temporary directory on a hard disk (e.g. "C:\nfsc2k_b.src").
  45.         Then the NFSSETUP.EXE from this directory will be started.
  46.         Go through the installation process.
  47.  
  48.    2.3. If installation is successful, then the following files should be
  49.         seen in the Windows 2000 system directory (after system restart):
  50.          XWPNFSFS.SYS  ->   \SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\XWPNFSFS.SYS,
  51.          XWNTSERV.EXE  ->   \SYSTEM32\XWNTSERV.EXE,
  52.          XWNTFS32.DLL  ->   \SYSTEM32\XWNTFS32.DLL

  54.         The "NFSCLPAR.EXE" and "UNINSTALL.EXE" files will be placed
  55.         into the prompted "c:\xnfsclnt" control directory. These programs
  56.         are also accessible via Windows "Start menu" :
  57.         - "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Settings";
  58.         - "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Uninstall".

  60.         You can check out the registration of NFS Client by the regedt32
  61.         facility. Look for the following keys:
  62.          - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Labtam->XWPNFS32;
  63.          - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Control->
  64.                                                NetworkProvider->Order;
  65.          - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Services->
  66.                                                              XWNTSERV;
  67.          - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Services->
  68.                                                              XwpNTrdr;
  69.    2.4. Restart Your PC.

  72.                       3. Testing
  73.  
  74.    3.1. Double click "My Network Place" and then "Entire Network".
  75.         You will see the "XwpNTrdr" icon.
  76.         (May be, you will have to select "Entire contents of the network".)
  77.    3.2. Double click on the "XwpNTrdr" and then "Remote NFS Servers" icons.
  78.         As a result, you will see a list of nodes of your local network
  79.         with available NFS Server.
  80.    3.3. By double clicking, select a node you want to connect to.
  81.         You will see icons with names of exported directories.
  82.    3.4. Select an exported directory and press the right mouse button.
  83.         Select the "Map Network Drive..." item in the popup menu.
  84.         Select a letter to mount a drive and press "Finish".
  85.         As a result, you will see the contents of the mounted directory
  86.         on your desktop.
  87.    3.5. You should test the following operations:
  88.          - Creating new files and directories;
  89.          - Deleting files and directories;
  90.          - Renaming files;
  91.          - Copying files from remote to local machine and vice versa.
  92.          - Viewing the contents of files by WordPad, and so on.
  93.    3.6. Dismounting the network drive:
  94.          - Select "My Computer" and press the right mouse button.
  95.          - Select the "Dismount Network Drive..." item in the popup menu,
  96.            then select the mounted drive, and press "OK".

  99.                     4. NFS Client Removing
  100.  
  101.    4.1. Run "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Uninstall"
  102.         (or directly the UNINSTAL.EXE from the directory
  103.          containing the NFS-Client package).
  104.    4.2. Go through the uninstallation process.
  105.    4.3. You can check the result of removing by regedt32 (see 2.3.).
  106.    4.4. Restart your PC.

  109.                     5. NFS Client settings
  110.  
  111.    5.1. Run "Start menu"->"Programs"->"X-WinPro NFS Client"->"Settings".
  112.    5.2. View/change settings.
  113.    5.3. Restart your PC if necessary.

  116.                     6. Known disadvantages
  117.  
  118.    1. The NT Memory caching not implemented.
  119.    2. The Memory Mapped Files not implemented.
  120.    3. The Paging I/0 requests not supported.
  121.    4. The UNC (Universal Naming Conventional) not implemented.
  122.    5. The using of nonmapped imported directories (e.g., by
  123.         double click) not implemented.
  124.    6. The "PCNFSd"-authentication of the NFS Client user not implemented.
  125.    7. The File Lock/Unlock requests not supported yet.
  126.    8. Not all "Get/Set" file attributes functions implemented yet.

  129.                     7. Known Problems
  130.  
  131.    1. It is possible to hang up the MS Explorer up to 5 minutes after
  132.       create/delete a directory on mounted devices.
  133.    2. Icons of executable files may be incorrect.
  134.    3. The time attributes of files in DOS sessions may be wrong.

  139.    The significantly improved beta 3 version will be issued
